The authorities of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) detected gross violation during surprise raid on various medicine stores, nursing homes and private hospitals near MKCG hospital.

A team of BeMC conducted the raids as part of its strategy to ensure compliance of the clinical establishment act and other norms in the larger interest of the patients and other stake holders.

During the inspection, it was found that some medicine stores were running on the pharmacist certificate of other persons while no qualified persons were found at the spot in such stores and a few hospitals. The team also inspected Operation Theatre at some private hospitals as well and found irregularities in waste management apart from other violations.

“We want to see that all such units have requisite certificates and permission under the clinical establishment act and for operating X-ray and ultra sound machines and whether qualified doctors and staff are engaged or not,” said BeMC Commissioner J Sonal.

According to Sonal, some of the units have violated norms under the Odisha Development Authority as the ceilings are in dilapidated condition and prone to disaster.

“We have also found that some units do not have occupancy certificate. Some hospitals and others are not doing proper segregation of medical waste and appropriate notice as per the violation will be issued,” Sonal added.
