A Sukhoi-30 and Mirage 2000 aircraft crashed near Morena in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday. Search and rescue operations have been launched, informed Defence sources.

According to the sources, the Sukhoi-30 MKI had two pilots while the Mirage had one during the crash that occurred in the bordering area of Morena and Bharatpur (Rajasthan). One fighter jet fell in Bharatpur and the other one in Morena.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) later confirmed that two fighter jets crashed during a routine exercise, adding that two pilots are safe while a third sustained "fatal injuries". In a statement, the IAF said the accident took place when the Sukhoi-30 MKI and Mirage 2000 were engaged in the air bombing exercise.

“Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh was briefed by the Chief of Air Staff on the crash of the two aircraft of the Indian Air Force. Singh enquired about the well-being of the IAF pilots and is monitoring the developments closely,” informed Defence Ministry sources.

In a statement, the IAF said that it has established a "Court of Inquiry which will establish whether there was a mid-air collision or not" between the two fighter jets.

Locals who witnessed the crash informed the local police after which the Gwalior Air Force Station was notified about the incident. Videos from the scene shot by residents of the area showed aircraft debris on the ground.

On the other hand, a chartered aircraft crashed in Bharatpur. However, defence sources confirmed that IAF jets have crashed in the vicinity, reported ANI.

"Received information about a plane crash around 10-10.15 am. After coming here, it was found to be an IAF fighter jet. Going by the debris, we're unable to adjudge if it's a fighter plane or a regular plane. Yet to know if pilots got out or are still in," Bharatpur DSP to ANI at Bharatpur.
