The Odisha State Election Commission (SEC) on Tuesday issued a notification in connection with the forthcoming Panchayat elections giving a second chance to candidates to file their nominations from the Wards, Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad seats where nominations were not filed or all the nominations were rejected.

“Official notification for filing of the fresh nomination papers will be announced on January 27. Aspiring candidates could file their nomination papers between January 29 and 31. The papers will be scrutinised on February 1. Candidates could withdraw their papers from February 2-4 and subsequently the final list of the candidates will be announced on the last day,” said State Chief Election Commission Aditya Prasad Padhi.

As per reports, over 4,000 areas don't have candidates for Ward members, Sarpanchs and Samiti members.

“However, this will be the final chance for the candidates to file their nominations for the forthcoming Panchayat polls. If there are still some places with no nominations, the State government will select the Sarpanchs and Samiti members for those seats,” said Padhi.

The State Chief Election Commission also indicated that considering the Covid-19 situation in the State, a decision regarding the guidelines for the Panchayat election campaigning will be taken.

“We are keeping a strong vigil on the Covid-19 situation in the State and accordingly a decision about the guidelines for Panchayat election campaigning will be taken soon,” said Padhi.
