A murder convict, serving a term at the Rairangpur sub-jail in Mayurbhanj district, died while undergoing treatment at a city hospital on late Thursday night.

The deceased has been identified as Daman Murmu, a native of Sapaghara village under Tiring police station. He had been lodged in the jail since 2015 after a court sentenced him to life imprisonment in a murder case. Murmu had allegedly killed his neighbour in a fit of rage following arguments.

As per reports, Murmu became unconscious and was immediately admitted to the hospital by the jail authorities. However, he breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The actual reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained.

“Murmu had psychiatric disorders and he was regularly taking medicines. However, he refused to take medicines last night and became unconscious. We took him to the hospital in an ambulance immediately. But he died while undergoing treatment at the hospital,” said Bulu Matia, Superintendent of Rairangpur sub-jail.

Earlier in August last year, an under-trial prisoner lodged at Athmalik sub-jail in Angul district had died under similar circumstances.

The prisoner identified as Suman Dehury was admitted to a local hospital after he was found in an unconscious state. He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
