Acne is a bump or cyst that appears on the skin's surface and is caused by clogged pores. It might show up on the face, neck, shoulder, back, chest, or upper arms. There are multiple reasons why acne affects people. Read on to identify the root cause of your acne.

Different Types of Acne

There are several types of acne. The most common ones are generally referred to as comedones, which also include blackheads (open pores) and whiteheads (closed pores). The pores’ exposure to oxygen determines whether acne is black or white. It becomes black when exposed to oxygen, whereas skin-related breakouts are flesh-colored or whiteheads. However, inflammatory lesions usually result in scarring.

What Causes Acne?

Many of us believe that acne develops during adolescence and disappears as we grow older. However, lots of factors including diet, stress, hormones, and personal hygiene can cause acne at any age. Given below are some of the causes:

1. Unhygienic lifestyle

The cause of acne is a blockage of pores on the skin. These blocks can be caused by oil, dust, dead skin cells, or bacteria. These blockages result in the formation of lesions and can occur as a result of not changing pillowcases frequently, or not cleaning your skin after a workout. Also, if you touch your face with dirty hands, bacteria can be transferred to your skin and cause acne.

2. Hormonal Changes

Hormones can lead to acne growth. Androgens are hormones that increase throughout puberty in both males and females and cause the sebaceous glands to expand and create more sebum. Hormonal changes around midlife, particularly in women, can trigger breakouts as well.

3. Unhealthy Eating

A proper diet makes a significant contribution to healthy skin along with all the other factors. Foods with a high GI index, such as sugar and bread, dairy, and sugar can all cause acne. Avoiding these foods helps reduce acne and improve gut health.

4. Stress

Acne is triggered by stress. Although stress does not cause acne, it can worsen it. Many people find it beneficial to meditate daily, sleep enough, practice yoga, or just chat with family or friends to calm their nerves and relax.

5. Genetics

Many people do not know but acne can be inherited. According to research, having acne-prone parents increases a person's risk of having it.

Now that you understand the possible causes of this common ailment, try and follow a healthier lifestyle to treat acne. If however, the problem is acute, consulting a dermatologist may help.
