When Dimple Kapadia said she married Rajesh Khanna to get back at her ex-BF, had second thoughts

The marriage of Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna seemed to be doomed right from the start. The Bollywood superstar decided to get married to the Bobby girl Dimple who was much younger than him simply because his ex-girlfriend Anju Mahendru refused to marry him. While many feel that for Dimple it was a dream come true to marry Kaka, that was not so. She was too young to understand the responsibilities of being married to a superstar like Rajesh Khanna.

During an interview, Dimple Kapadia shared her state of mind when she had given a nod to marry the Aradhana actor. The Rudaali actress had admitted that she had second thoughts about the marriage but still went ahead as planned. The actress said, “I felt that the entire courtship was not happening to me, it was happening to another girl. I did have second thoughts though of rushing into marriage. But I fought with my boyfriend a few days ago. It was my way of hitting back at him. I was even willing to call off the marriage if he had phoned me. He didn’t. I could not backtrack from the marriage.”

Dimple said that it all seemed unreal to her and that she felt like a queen. Since her father had always rejected her earlier boyfriends she had to meet them secretly. But he accepted her marriage to Rajesh Khanna readily and she thought that this marriage was a ticket to freedom for her.

The veteran actress said that like all the other girls in those days, she was also in awe of Kaka and used to like him and his movies and found him overpowering. She said, “I believe in romance and that is a major problem with me. I don’t function at a normal level. I see too much into things even when they are not there. I get carried away.”

Rajesh Khanna was 31 years old when he proposed to 16-year-old Dimple Kapadia. After almost 9 years of marriage and two children the two parted ways in 1982.
