The Odisha Capital on Tuesday witnessed yet another gruesome murder with a youth in Kalinga Slum under Badagada Police limits allegedly killing his mother and setting her body on fire.

The deceased has been identified as Rasmita Jena. The accused, Prashant Jena, who is the elder son of the deceased, has been detained by the police.

Though the motive behind the murder is still unclear, the deceased's younger son Basant claimed that his brother killed his mother after she refused to give him money to smoke pot, which he was addicted to.

Speaking to OTV, Basant said, “My eldest brother is addicted to weed and frequently demanded money from my mother for the same. He even manhandled her many times earlier when she refused to give him money.”

“I was out with friends and he (Prashant) was at home alone with my mother. Suddenly, I was informed over phone that my house is on fire. I came running and found the house burning. After extinguishing the blaze, I found my mother’s half charred body in the house,” Basant said.

“When I asked my brother about who did this, he confessed in front of me that he has indeed burnt our mother,” he alleged.

After a complaint was lodged at the Badagada Police station, the personnel launched a probe and detained Prashant for questioning.

Recently, a youth was stabbed to death near Press Chowk in the capital city on Saturday.
