Crime rate on rise in Odisha with over 1.55 lakh cases registered in 2021

The number of crimes has been increasing substantially in Odisha as around 1.55 lakh cases were registered in 2021. Last year, around 1.34 lakh criminal cases were registered in the State.

As per the white paper released by the State Home Department, a total of 1,55,420 criminal cases were registered last year out of which 1,49,232 were true. Of the total cases- 3,327 are rape, 552 are dacoity and 1394 are murder cases. 

Police have to resort to firing 23 times to maintain law and order in 2021. Similarly, the security personnel had to exchange fire with the Maoists 21 times, the report revealed.

The state has registered 298 dowry-related death cases and 129 dowry-related suicide cases during the last year. A total of 4,949 dowry-related cases were registered during the period.

Notably, a total of 1,21,535 criminal cases were registered in the State in 2019.
