Guwahati: Two days ahead of the Raising Day of the banned ULFA, Assam Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Choudhury today termed the organisation as a group of "mercenaries" out to extort money from the people.

"ULFA in the 1990s was different. They had then a committed group of youngsters. Now they have become mercenaries," Choudhury told reporters here. The banned organisation was trying to create a fear psychosis to continue extortion from corporates and common people, he said.

The central government has ordered red alert in Assam and neighbouring states in the run-up to its Raising Day on April 7. Police have kept some districts like Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Darrang and Goalpara under particular scanner.

Police said ULFA leader Dristi Rajkhowa was currently hiding in Goalpara district bordering Meghalaya and two hardcore ultras Babul and Pradeep Gogoi in upper Assam.
