Odisha farming goes high-tech, drone used to spray pesticides in Nayagarh

In a significant step towards promoting modern technology in agriculture, pesticide spraying through drones was successfully demonstrated in Sajjanpada village of Nayagarh district. The initiative, conducted by the Nayagarh Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), showcased how unmanned aerial vehicles can be effectively used to address the challenges of pest control in farmlands.

At present, pest and disease management has emerged as one of the biggest concerns for farmers across Odisha. Traditional methods of pesticide spraying are often labour-intensive, time-consuming, and less effective, especially when large areas of crops are affected. In this backdrop, drones have opened up new possibilities, allowing faster, more uniform, and cost-effective application of pesticides.

During the demonstration, pesticides were sprayed using a drone across six hectares of paddy fields in Sajjanpada. Farmers from the area were present on the occasion and observed the process closely. Agricultural experts explained that the use of drones ensures not only better coverage but also reduces the direct exposure of farmers to harmful chemicals, making the practice safer.

Officials of the KVK highlighted that the government is actively encouraging the use of advanced technology in farming to enhance productivity and ensure sustainable practices. With initiatives like these, farmers are expected to adopt drone-based spraying more widely in the coming years.

The demonstration left many local farmers optimistic. Several expressed hope that such modern interventions would help reduce crop losses due to pests and improve their yields, particularly at a time when agriculture faces mounting challenges from climate change and unpredictable rainfall.
