Kendrapara: A man who had allegedly strangulated his wife and killed his two minor daughters after the woman failed to bear a male child in Kendrapara district, was arrested here today, police said.

Earlier, three close relatives of the assailant were arrested for abetting the crime, they said.

Nirmal Rout (32), assisted by his two younger brothers, parents and a close relative, had strangulated his wife Rinarani Jena and two daughters, Kandhei(5) and Kuni(2), in Dhobeigada on August 19 triggering outrage in the district, they said.

The assailant was an alcoholic and was not pulling on well with his spouse to whom he had been married since the last six years and had committed the offence in a fit of rage.

On interrogation, it was established that strangulation led to death of the trio.

"Investigation was still on as the parents of the assailant are still at large. We hope the absconders would throw light on the case", said Kendrapara Superintendent of Police, Sarthak Sarangi.

"Apart from the male progeny angle, we have detected dowry related torture for committing the crime of this nature," Sarangi said.

He was forwarded to court on charges of murder and dowry torture which rejected his bail plea and remanded in jail custody, police said.
