Kokrajhar (Assam): Curfew was imposed here this evening for an indefinite period after a series of violent incidents rocked the town last night. The town witnessed violence after a sweet-shop owner Lalchand Badani was killed by unidentified gunmen in the vicinity of Kokrajhar police station on Saturday.

Following the death, a mob damaged several government vehicles in front of the deputy commission`s office and gheraoed it. They also pelted stones at the Kokrajhar police station and superintendent of police bungalow besides burning tyres on the road.

To quell the mob, police fired several rounds in the air and burst tear gas shells injuring one person who was hospitalised. The Merchant Association of Kokrajhar called an indefinite Kokrajhar bandh today protesting the alleged failure of the civil and police administration in providing security to traders and people. Kokrajhar SP P K Dutta said yesterday`s incident was serious as it had taken place very close to the Kokrajhar police station.
