New Delhi: With the government gearing up to bring the Lokpal bill in the Winter Session of Parliament, UPA trouble shooter Pranab Mukherjee had a meeting with Abhishek Singhvi, the Chairman of the Standing Committee scrutinzing the measure. Sources said the meeting that lasted for close to an hour was also attended by Congress MPs, who are members of the Committee.

The meeting took place a day before Team Anna, which met on Saturday, asked the government to ensure passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Winter session of Parliament failing which they would oppose Congress in the Assembly elections in five states scheduled early next year.

It is learnt that the meeting between Singhvi and Mukherjee also discussed the latest version of the Lokpal bill submitted by former Chief Justices of India J S Verma and M N Venkatachaliah, which seeks to give Constitutional power to Lokpal.

Sources say that the Standing Committee is studying the various pros and cons to give Constitutional status to Lokpal as it would require an amendment in the Constitution and the support of a two third majority to pass it.
