Jammu: With annual pilgrimage to Amarnath shrine in South Kashmir set to begin from June 29, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will deploy about 5,000 personnel to ensure adequate security for a smooth yatra.

"As many as 49 additional CRPF companies (each with 100 personnel) will be deployed for the security of Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir this year," a CRPF spokesman said.

He said that additional companies have been mobilised from reserve CRPF forces in the state and these are other than those deployed for other security duties in Jammu and Kashmir.

"They would be exclusively deployed for the security of cave shrine, routes, area domination, yatra escorts and other security duties connected with Amarnath yatra," he said.

The CRPF has played a key role in the multi-agency security grid for Amarnath yatra for many years now.

Over 2.25 lakh pilgrims have registered themselves for the pilgrimage to the 13,500-feet high cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas.

The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), at its meeting on February 18 this year, decided to commence the yatra on June 29 and it will culminate on August 13.
