Bhubaneswar: Cutting across party lines, members of Odisha Assembly today demanded enhancement of MLAs Local Area Development (MLA LAD) Fund from Rs one crore to Rs three crore. The members raised the demand during question hour when ruling BJD legislator Ramesh Chandra Chaupatnaik sought increase of the MLA LAD Fund to Rs 2 crore. Other members wanted a three fold increase in the fund.

"We demand hike in the size of MLA LAD Fund because of soaring inflation and rising demands in constituencies," said NCP legislature Party Leader Amar Prasad Satpathy said. Satpathy`s argument was supported by several members including BJD`s Damodar Rout and Sanjay Dasburma, Congress party`s Anup Sai and Karendra Majhi of BJP.

Responding to the demand, Planning and Coordination minister A U Singhdeo said the proposal to increase the MLA LAD Fund was under active consideration of the government. "We have also sought information on the size of MLA LAD Fund in other states," he said.
