Bhubaneswar: The state government on Wednesday announced to take over as many as 24 co-operative units of the state including the Orissa State Co-operative Bank. The move has also scrapped all the existing elected chairperson posts of the units.

Last year amending state co-operative laws the government derecognised all the elected bodies of the units to take over the charge. Member of the bodies challenging the government’s move, knocked the doors of High Court whose verdict came in favour of the petitioners. In its verdict High Court directed the state government to reinstate members of the dismissed bodies.

When the state co-operative department challenged the decision of the High Court before the apex court, it put a stay over certain orders of the HC. After consulting the law department, the stat government took a decision to scrap all the co-operative units.
