CMC takes measures to provide relief from heat to deer in park

Cuttack: With the whole of Odisha reeling under an intense heat wave, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has put in place measures to provide all possible care to the deer residing at the deer park at Tulsipur area here.

The CMC has started taking extra care of the herbivorous animals providing them green, leafy vegetables and fruits with high water content. Like every year, CMC has started the special drive from April 1 to save the deer from the scorching summer.

Nimai Charan Das, in-charge of Park plantation said, “As per the recommendation of veterinary doctor, we are giving 50 kilogram of green vegetables to the deer in the park and this drive will continue till May last.”

When asked about the overpopulation problem at the park, Das said, “Half the deer will be shifted to the second deer park of the city whose construction work is under progress at Uttampur.”

“We are planting trees at the park as per the recommendation of Central Zoo Authority. Half the deer will be shifted to the park which spans over an area of four acre once the atmosphere of the park becomes suitable for the animals,” Das added.

Talking to newsmen, BJD corporator from ward number 16 Ramjan Khan said, “As the mercury is going up with each passing day, the time has come to take extra care of these deer. Moreover, the park itself seems too cramped for 152 deer.”

“Keeping the summer in mind, we are now providing the animals green and leafy vegetables and fruits with high water content. Apart from their daily diet, we are giving them water melons, cabbage, spinach, papaya and cucumber to maintain water level in their bodies.”

“We are also providing them glucose solution. Besides, the municipal corporation has made arrangements to sprinkle water on the animals during the during the peak hours of the day,” Khan informed.

“The deer are undergoing regular health checkups and adequate arrangements have been done for the animal,” Khan added
