Addressing media, Xi said, "China cannot develop without the world, and the world also needs China".
Xi had not been seen in public since returning to Beijing from the summit on September 16
Putin likewise praised the "multifaceted ties" the two countries have forged, in particular their trade relationship. Highlighting the exchange of $140 billion in trade with Beijing last year, he noted that the volume had increased 25 per cent in the first half of 2022 and said he hoped the figure could reach $200 billion by the end of the year.
Ahead of their discussion, over video link, the US said Biden would urge China not to provide Russia with military equipment.
On his part, Xi said the two countries needed to improve "communication" and face challenges "together".
"The fact that China is trying to assert, understandably, a new role in the world as a world leader - not showing up, come on," Biden said, adding that Xi's absence was a "big mistake",
