Sarmistha Rout, the main accused in the sensational murder of cameraman Manas Swain and her associate Jhuna Bhoi were sent to 14-day judicial custody following completion of their police remand on Thursday.
The Crime Branch deposed Sarmistha Rout, Jhuna Bhoi, former OIS officer Niranjan Sethi and Ranjan Nayak alias Raj before the JMFC and prayed the court for five day remand of the accused.
The Odisha Crime Branch, which is investigating the murder of Nayagarh cameraman Manas Swain, on Friday claimed that the prime accused in the case, Sarmistha Rout, has confessed to her involvement in the gruesome crime.
The Crime Branch may again appeal to the court for fresh remand of the accused if needed.
The multiple internal injuries were well enough to cause cameraman Manas Swain's instantaneous death, the chilling facts in the post mortem report say.
Sarmistha was arrested from Bhadrak earlier in the day along with her associate Jhuna Bhoi, about one and a half month after being on the run.
Cameraman Manas Swain, a resident of Nayagarh district, was allegedly tortured and beaten to death in the Dayal Ashram.
A resident of Palaspur village under Chandbali police limits in Bhadrak district has claimed that he had witnessed Sarmistha Rout and her henchmen kidnapping cameraman Manas Swain on February 6.
Though the hide and seek game is being seen as a time-buying tactic by key suspects to erase the crime trail, police expect a breakthrough in the next 48 hours
“We are not under pressure. We are putting the best of our efforts to nab absconding accused Sarmistha Rout and her associate,” Bhadrak SP Charan Singh Meena said.
