On March 23 about 13 Indian fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for fishing in their waters.
Fishermen organisations of Tamil Nadu alleged that the Sri Lankan navy also seized one mechanized boat used by the fishermen.
In a separate incident, 13 fishermen from Nagapattinam and Karaikal were also questioned and detained. They had set sail from Karaikkal port on Wednesday morning.
With this incident, 29 fishermen and six fishing boats are under the custody of the Sri Lankan authorities in the month of February alone.
Sixty-three Indian Fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested and remanded to judicial custody by the Sri Lankan Navy in December 2021, and 53 of these fishermen are still in an isolation centre of the Sri Lankan government after being released from prison.
The MEA said India handed over a list of 282 Pakistan civilian prisoners and 73 fishermen in India's custody to Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistan has shared lists of 51 civilian prisoners and 577 fishermen in its custody, who are Indians or are believed to be Indians.
In March, the Navy seized five fishing vessels and 54 Indian nationals for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
