Bhubaneswar: In a bid to ensure hassle free journey for women in twin cities, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched special bus service for the ladies today to mark the International Women’s day.

" I am delighted that on International Women's Day, this bus service has been intitiated and inagurated for women", CM Naveen Patanik said after flagging off the bus service.

In the wake of increasing crime against women, the state transport department had contemplated to roll out special buses for the working ladies and girls students in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

According to sources, two buses will ply between two cities in the first phase while the number of vehicles will be increased subsequently, official sources said. The women conductors will man the service and later lady drivers will be appointed in the special buses, sources added.

Even as seats in every bus are reserved for women, men are found occupying them. The new initiative of the government has brought relief for the women commuters, a working lady said.

Last month the Centre asked all states to start exclusive buses for women in million-plus cities as part of initiatives being taken to tackle the rise of sexual crimes against women.
