BJP seeks rights panels probe into Dal scam
Bhubaneswar: Seeking an inquiry into the Dal scam by Orissa State Human Rights Commission, BJP on Thursday sought a direction to the director general of vigilance department to submit their findings as on date on the irregularities in the mid-day meal (MDM) and supplementary nutrition programme (SNP).
The party also sought health check-up of beneficiaries of feeding programmes and immediate withdrawal of infected pulses supplied under the MDM and SNP.
A 10-member delegation of the BJP today submitted a memorandum with the chairman of the state`s rights panel highlighting impact of infected dal on the health of poor children and pregnant women.
The BJP which had been demanding resignation of the chief minister Naveen Patnaik over the dal scam issue, claimed that consumption of bad quality pulses must have its adverse impact on the health of above one crore beneficiaries, including 50 lakh school going children and many pregnant women.
"We also demanded immediate withdrawal of infected dal from all the schools and anganwadi centres supplied under the MDM and SNP," said BJP state vice-president Ashok Sahu adding that the party also demanded stringent action against those involved in supply of inedible dal.
Though Pramila Mallik had already resigned as the minister of the women and child development department, the BJP said it would continue agitation till all the culprits were booked.
Meanwhile, the new WCD minister Prafulla Samal said that the state government had already taken several measures including withdrawing bad quality of dal from different districts, if any.
"The state government through vigilance has been probing into the alleged corruption in the dal irregularities," Samal said.
