Bhubaneswar: Markets and jewellery shops across the city witnessed a huge rush on Monday as people across Odisha celebrated Dhanteras.

In the Capital City, people were found making a beeline at markets to buy gold, silver, electronic items and utensils.

Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi falls on the 13th day of the lunar phase or krishna paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu month of Kartik. While dhan means “wealth”, trayodashi means the “13th day”. There is a popular belief that buying gold and silver on this “auspicious” day brings prosperity.

Hallmark director said, “As compared to past four-five months, the business has increased in last three-four days. Buying is good despite adverse market condition. Especially, designer and fancy jewellery are in demand.”

Jewellers in an attempt to attract more customers offered attractive schemes and discounts in making charges.

Gold was traded at Rs 25, 540 per 10 grams.

People were also seen buying silver jewellery and utensils.
