Koraput: In a major setback for Naxals, a hardcore Maoist was arrested from Matalamba forest in the district on Saturday.
During a joint combing operation of a team of BSF and local police Satya Madingi, a member of Srikakulam-Koraput Divisional Committee, was nabbed, said IGP (southwestern) IG Yashwant Jethwa.
One claymore mine, some detonators, electric wire and battery were also recovered from Madingi whose involvement is suspected in several killings, said sources.
On Friday, a woman Maoist Sivabati Markami alias Sandhya who was an active Area Committee Member of Goraband Dalam of CPI (Maoists) had surrendered before police in Nabarangpur district. The state government had declared Rs 1 lakh on her head.
Earlier, seven Maoists involved in cases of violence at Narayanpatna and Laxmipur on May 21 had laid down their arms before the security personnel. On May 10, another hardcore Maoist Jambu Madingi alias Walisi had surrendered to the local police. Similarly, eight members of banned Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee on May 1 had put down their arms.
Meanwhile, Talagolu Sarpanch Baldaboi Pati on Saturday tendered his resignation to Potangi BDO attributing it to mental tensions.
Source said the Sarpanch was following the orders of his Maoist abductors who kidnapped Pati along with two persons two weeks back. While the ultras had killed the other two, they had released Pati with a warning to resign from the Sarpanch post or get killed.
