Rourkela: Rourkela Development Committee on Wednesday announced its decision to launch an indefinite rail roko agitation at Rourkela Junction from April 17 to press the long pending demands.

After chairing a meeting of the committee, Subrat Patnaik, president, Rourkela Chambers of commerce told reporters that there was no optiion but to go for indefinite agitation as little step was taken to meet the demands.

Several memoranda had been submitted to the railways authorities and discussions also held in presence of Additional District Magistrate (ADM), Rourkela and Railway authorities but there was no solution to the old genuine problems of the people, he said.

The development committee, a non-political body formed with political leaders, members of socio-cultural organisations, religious bodies, representatives of business organisations had alleged that although railway was getting much revenue from Orissa and Wester parts of Orissa in particular on commercial and raw material transportation, had been neglecting the genuine demands of the people of Orissa and particularly Rourkela.

The committee had been demanding extension of Hatia-Jammu-Tawi express and Hatia-Gorakhpur express upto Rourkela, creation of a railway division at Rourkela, running of Haridwar-Puri Utakal-Kalinga express and Koraput-Howrah, Samaleswari express via Rourkela. Both the night trains were suspended due to maoists threat for the last eight months, creation of a washing yard and rail terminal centre at Rourkela.
