Family Refuses To Accept Minor Girl After Rape In Odisha

Phulbani: A minor girl was allegedly raped and then subjected to social boycott by her family and other villagers in Odisha’s Kandhamal district.

As per sources, a minor girl from Baliguda area in the district was allegedly raped and impregnated by a miscreant in June earlier this year. The police had reportedly apprehended the accused and forwarded him to the court.

But surprisingly, the ordeal of the survivor became even worse when she was boycotted by none other than her own parents after reports of her pregnancy came to fore. Following the incident, CWC officials have sent the girl to a local welfare centre.

“My daughter was impregnated by a ‘Harijan’. So we can’t allow her to live with us anymore. She can live in an ashram or can go anywhere she wishes with her child, but we can’t take her back,” said the father of the survivor.

Meanwhile, social activist Rutuparna Mohanty said, “This inhumane behaviour by the girl’s parents and the villagers can be attributed to their illiteracy. Had they been educated, they would not have kicked her out while she was pregnant.”

No comments could be obtained from the police or from the child welfare committee in this regard.
