IMD issues thunderstorms and lightning alert for several Odisha districts

The IMD has issued yellow and orange warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several districts of Odisha. Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Keonjhar face the highest risk.

Several parts of Odisha are currently experiencing persistent thunderstorms, influenced by an atmospheric trough line. Many regions are also witnessing heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and strong winds.

A yellow warning has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for three districts: Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Keonjhar, highlighting the risk of thunderstorms and possible lightning strikes.

Yellow Weather Warnings Issued:

IMD has issued yellow warning for these three districts- Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Keonjhar. Residents of these districts have been advised to stay indoors as the  wind speeds are anticipated to range between 30 to 40 km/hr. Heavy rain warning and potential hailstorms have also been anticipated in certain areas within these districts.

Rain and Lightning Forecast:

Apart from the aforementioned districts, areas in Anugul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Gajapati, and Ganjam are predicted to experience light showers combined with lightning. A shift in the weather pattern is anticipated after tomorrow, bringing some relief from the current conditions.

Meanwhile, the local administration has advised residents to stay indoors and take necessary precautions against potential hazards posed by these weather conditions.

No Change in Temperature:

Despite the thunderstorm and lightning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that there will be no large change in minimum temperature (night temperature) in Odisha during the next 4-5 days. An ‘Orange warning’ has been issued for some districts for today.

Day 1 (Valid upto 0830 hrs IST of 24.02.2025)

Orange Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50kmph, and hail is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore. 

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Angul, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Gajapati, Ganjam.

Day 2 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 24.02.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 25.02.2025)

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Keonjhar.
