Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has replaced aggressive batsman Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Rohit was one of the most successful captains in the history of the cash-rich league with five trophies with MI. As a player, Rohit won six titles with one of them coming with Deccan Chargers.

On the other hand, Hardik returned to his former team MI following a sensational trade move from Gujarat Titans (GT). The star all-rounder was the captain of GT for two years. Under his captaincy, GT won the title in 2022.

MI’s announcement about the appointment of Hardik as the captain of the team in place of Rohit triggered massive meme fest over various social media platforms with netizens coming up with hilarious posts.

It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season,” said Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance, Mumbai Indians.

“We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary. His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL.

Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and loved teams ever. We will look forward to his guidance and experience on and off the field to further strengthen MI.

We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him all the very best,” the former Sri Lankan great added.
