The State unit of Odisha Congress on Wednesday sought a special compensation package for farmers hit with massive crop loss this season in the wake of unseasonal rain triggered by cyclonic storm Jawad.

While addressing mediapersons, State Congress spokesperson Padmakar Guru said farmers in the state have suffered extensive damage to their paddy crops because of record rainfall and they should be compensated adequately by the State government.

“The district level leaders of Congress have made ground surveys at various places in the State. As per their reports, the farmers are in shock and distress due to the huge crop loss,” said Guru.

“The farmers are going through depression as they are helpless because of the situation. Now, it has become difficult for them to earn their living. The State government should take serious cognizance of the situation, assess the damages on war footing and extend financial assistance to the farmers immediately,” said Guru.

The party has also warned to stage protests on December 15 if their demands are not met at the earliest.

“The Chief Minister, Agriculture Minister and Secretary should immediately assure the farmers of the State that they will stand by them during their hard times and provide them financial assistance. Otherwise, our party with help of Kishan Congress Committee and Pradesh Congress Committee will stage massive protests in front of Governor’s House in Bhubaneswar on December 15,” warned Guru.
