Throwing the law and order situation to the wind, several unidentified miscreants allegedly looted gold and silver jewellery and other valuable items from four temples in Gardapara area under ward number 28 in Bhadrak district on Monday night.

According to sources, the miscreants broke open the locks of the temples and fled with valuable gold jewellery and other sacred items. 

The looters targeted Mangala, Shiva, Radha-Krishna, and Hanuman temples in the area and decamped with the valuables. Besides, they allegedly stole cash from the donation boxes at the temples, sources informed.

The crime came to light when shocked villagers discovered the desecration on Tuesday morning and quickly informed the Purana Bazar police.

"Silver crown, necklace, earrings, anklet, bracelet were found missing from the Radha Krushna temple. Similarly, I found the gate of Hanuman temple broke open and donation box was missing. Similarly, silver crown of Goddess Mangala, which weighs more than 1 kg, was also stone," alleged a local resident.

" Jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh was stolen from the temples. Silver jewellery weighing over 1 kg was stolen.  I think the miscreants break open the doors of the temple after 1 pm. Besides, they also looted cash from the donation box," another local alleged.

Meanwhile, the locals attributed the theft due to lack of police patrolling in the region.

On being informed about the incident, police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation into the matter.

No comments from the police could be obtained over the matter.
