Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday witnessed 'Ramakien', the Thai version of the Ramayan, after arriving in Bangkok, symbolising the deep cultural ties between India and Thailand.

He arrived in the Southeast Asian country to a grand reception by the Indian diaspora, who greeted him with enthusiastic chants of "Modi Modi" and "Vande Mataram."

Ramakien: Thailand’s National Epic

The Ramakien (รามเกียรติ์) is Thailand’s revered national epic, an adaptation of the Indian Ramayana that blends Hindu mythology with Thai cultural elements. The story follows Prince Rama, his devoted wife Sita, and the heroic monkey-god Hanuman in their quest to defeat the demon king Totsakan (the Thai counterpart of Ravana). While staying true to the essence of the Ramayana, the Ramakien incorporates distinct Thai traditions, folklore, and artistic influences.

Distinctive Aspects of the "Ramakien"

Thai Cultural Integration: The epic reflects Thailand’s unique beliefs, customs, and mythology, setting it apart from its Indian origins.

Artistic Legacy: The Ramakien is immortalised in traditional murals, literature, and the elaborate khon masked dance-drama, which brings its characters to life.

Royal Endorsement: King Rama I of the Chakri dynasty compiled and refined the Ramakien, elevating it to the status of a national treasure.

This adaptation of the Ramayana remains a cornerstone of Thai heritage, influencing art, literature, and performance for generations.
