The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday launched drone service to bring down the mosquito menace in the capital city.
As a trial basis, using a drone, a certain type of chemical was sprayed from the sky at Niladree Vihar area. Earlier, a survey was carried out in the area to identify the breeding spots. Then the spray was carried out over the specific spots. The civic body has decided to spray 100 litres of chemical a day.
Informing about the steps taken by the BMC, Commissioner Vijay Amrita Kulange said, “The number of teams to carry out fogging has been increased, spraying of mosquito oil in drains has been intensified and now we have introduced drone service.”
“The drone will be used once a week. Since the severity of the mosquito menace is high in Bhubaneswar, we will engage another drone but only after seeing the effectiveness of our first step. We will also take feedback from the people of the area where medicine is being sprayed from the drone. If there is a result, we will go ahead,” Kulange added.
Notably, Snaayou Healthcare Company, Kolkata has been given the contract to conduct surveys of the mosquito breeding sites in Bhubaneswar. While small drones will be used to find out mosquito breeding sites, bigger drones will be used to spray chemical.
