Over the years Bollywood and its content have undergone a massive change. Nowadays, losing and adding weight or changing physique and appearance according to the demand of the script is very much the trend, but what continues to be an integral part of every Bollywood movie is music and songs. While India is home to a plethora of music types and songs including folk songs, regional songs, classical songs, and more, it is the film music especially Bollywood music that rules the hearts of the Indians.
Even today, music is an integral part of Bollywood movies but they seem to have lost their soul. The millennials still enjoy the songs from the 90s that continue to linger and had soulful vibes.
More technology than real music
Nowadays, the beats and tapping music is the trend with almost everyone expecting a Bollywood number to be converted for burning the dance floor. Most of the songs in Bollywood movies do not have much relevance to the storyline. And a few that are according to the situation are quite loud and exaggerated as the lyrics have taken a backseat and only digitalized music is given preference.
Indipop and rap culture
The confluence of Indian and Western music has always been accepted by the Bollywood audience. Be it Rock and Roll or Disco, the Indian audience lapped up the change in compositions. But all through this, the music composers ensured that the songs do not lose the Indian essence and are melodious to the ears. Today’s songs mostly are a blend of some Pop and Indian music with a rap that many times are nonsensical.
After the novelty wears off these songs lose their charm and are completely forgotten.
Innocence and love
90s Bollywood songs were full of love, innocence, and a bit of drama but that was what everyone expected from film songs. Emotions went riot when Kumar Sanu sang, “Ab Tere Bin” aur Udit Narayan rendered, “Jadoo teri nazar.” That was the era ruled by Nadeem Shravan, Anand Milind, and Jatin Lalit.
And as we celebrate World Music Day today, the memories of those beautiful songs from the 90s come rushing back.
