In view of several instances of fully vaccinated people contracting COVID-19, the Odisha government has urged the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar to undertake post vaccination follow up study.
“Some cases of COVID-19 positive cases are being reported from various districts of Odisha post double doses of the vaccination. In this regard, it is requested that RMRC Bhubaneswar may carry out a follow up to assess the hospitalization and severity among COVID-19 positive individuals post vaccination as compared to non-vaccinated COVID-19 positive individuals,” the Health department wrote in a letter to the Director, RMRC.
The health department said the findings of the study could provide valuable insights to prepare the future vaccination roadmap of the State.

The RMRC authorities have been requested to contact the designated hospitals treating COVID-19 patients to collect the relevant data from the infected individual/s.
The government further requested the RMRC to undertake the study on priority and share the findings at the earliest.
Additional Chief Secretary (Health) PK Mohapatra mentioned in the letter that Odisha has administered about 72.8 lakh doses of vaccines since January 16, 2021 to different categories. Out of these 65.3 lakhs were of Covishield and 7.5 lakh doses of Covaxin till May 26, 2021.
“The government have been urging people to get vaccinated, maintaining that the vaccine will not only protect one from contracting the coronavirus infection but also will prevent its progression to a severe form and thereby reduce mortality,” Mohapatra wrote in the letter.
