Cuttack: Orissa high court yesterday directed the State government to pay Rs 29 lakh as maintenance charge to a man freed from death penalty for not abiding court order. The government has been asked to deposit the amount at high court registry within four weeks.

According to sources, Duleswar Barik of Alapata in Sundergarh district was sentenced death penalty for murdering six persons.

However, his father had prayed the High Court to free his son citing mental imbalance.

Taking cognisance of the petition, the court freed him and asked the government to bear the medical expenses of Duleswar Barik, but government failed to follow the court ruling.
