More than 100 families at Goudabandha Sahi under ward 37 of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) have been rendered homeless. The civic body demolished their houses as part of an eviction drive on Wednesday.
While the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has fielded Sanghamitra Dalai for the Mayor post, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s pick is Dr Sabita Suar and the grand old party Congress’s choice is Manju Rath.
In Cuttack, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took out grand processions for their respective Mayor candidates that passed through the roads and lanes of the city.
Sabita said people of Berhampur city are fed up with the Biju Janata Dal rule for its complete failure in addressing basic problems.
As regards the benefit Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation would bestow on the citizens and the city by having a Woman Mayor, much depends on whether government would adopt the “business as usual” attitude or use the opportunity of utilizing the special leadership traits of a woman leader to the advantage of the citizenry and the city.
