Public concern over the safety of Odisha’s ‘Ama Bus’ service continues to intensify following a series of accidents reported from Bhubaneswar and other parts of the state. The repeated incidents have triggered fear among commuters and pedestrians, with many questioning the effectiveness of monitoring mechanisms and accountability within the City and Rural Transport (CRUT) system.

Over the past few days, multiple incidents involving Ama Buses have been reported. In Bhubaneswar, buses have allegedly collided with two-wheelers, while in Puri, pedestrians were reportedly run over in separate incidents. Videos and images of these accidents circulating widely have further heightened public anxiety, with residents stating that the frequent mishaps have made road travel increasingly unsafe.

The growing number of accidents has sparked criticism over alleged rash driving, inadequate supervision of drivers, and gaps in the enforcement of safety norms. Commuters and road users are raising questions about whether existing protocols are being followed and whether sufficient action is being taken to prevent further incidents.

Speaking to OTV, road safety expert Bikash Mohapatra emphasised the importance of adhering to basic traffic and safety principles. He noted that maintaining a safe distance between vehicles is critical, adding that a minimum gap of at least ten feet should be ensured to avoid collisions. He also stressed the need for regular vehicle maintenance and strict checks on the mechanical fitness of public transport vehicles.

Mohapatra further underlined the importance of driver alertness and sobriety, stating that drivers must not operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicating substances. In view of the repeated accidents, he called on CRUT authorities to proactively address public concerns and communicate clearly about the safety measures, monitoring systems, and accountability mechanisms in place.

As public scrutiny intensifies, commuters are demanding greater transparency and immediate corrective steps to ensure that the Ama Bus service operates safely and responsibly across the state.
