‘Ama Bus’ runs over woman in Puri; locals protest over poor road conditions

Another tragic road accident involving a government-operated Ama Bus was reported on Nabakalevar Road in Puri on Friday morning, after a bus allegedly ran over a woman, triggering protests by local residents.

According to reports, the CRUT-operated Ama Bus, travelling from Matiapada to Atharnala, hit the woman, causing serious injuries to her leg. She was immediately rushed to Puri Medical. Considering the severity of her condition, doctors later referred her to AIIMS for advanced treatment.

The incident sparked anger among local residents, who staged a road blockade demanding immediate intervention from the authorities. Protesters alleged that the condition of Nabakalevar Road is extremely poor and poses a constant threat to pedestrians and commuters.

Residents claimed they had repeatedly brought the safety concerns to the notice of the administration but alleged that no corrective action was taken. They demanded that the government bear the injured woman’s medical expenses and provide adequate compensation.

Among other demands, locals urged the administration to convert the stretch into a one-way road to prevent further accidents. Some residents also called for a complete ban on bus movement on the road, citing public safety concerns.

“Today, the Jagannath Bus hit an elderly woman, leaving her battling for life. We demand that the government bear her medical expenses and make this road one-way. We had earlier written to the District Collector, Commissioner, and SP, but no action was taken,” said a local resident.

On receiving information, Kumbharpada police reached the spot to control the situation, initiate an investigation into the incident, and restore traffic movement.
