Puri: Pregnant women admitted to the Puri district headquarters hospital struggled for hours as the authorities sealed the operation theatre (OT) of the maternal and newborn care department on Friday after a doctor and nurse tested positive for the coronavirus.

The patients and their attendants, who were seen waiting outside the operation theatre, have alleged that even after 24 hours the hospital is yet to be sanitised.

“After waiting for hours, the hospital authorities said they cannot perform surgery citing that two have tested positive for COVID-19 in the hospital. They asked me to shift the patient to Cuttack or Bhubaneswar,” an attendant of a patient said.

Last week, the intensive care unit (ICU) at the DHH was sealed after a patient tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile in Penthakata, police and district administration had a tough time after locals opposed them from shifting a COVID-19 patient to a hospital late on Friday night.

The cops, however, managed to convince the locals and take the patient to the hospital following a long discussion.

Puri, so far, has reported 803 COVID-19 cases of which 421 are still active. While 377 patients have recovered, the virus has claimed three lives in the district.
