Puri: The Puri district administration on Tuesday extended the restrictions imposed on cremation at Swargadwar for non-Puri residents till September 30, 2020.

The development came a day after Odisha government announced the guidelines for the month of September pertaining to COVID-19 Unlock 4.

“Restriction on observance of the last funeral rites of the deceased at Swargadwar, Puri belonging to other districts/states is hereby extended up to 30th September 2020 in view of COVID-19 Pandemic,” read an official letter.

Besides, immersion of ashes in the sea (Mahodadhi) has also been restricted for non-Puri residents till the end of September this year.

However, those who are in Puri are allowed to visit Swargadwar for cremation and immersion of ashes at Mahodadhi, but with strict observance of the COVID-19 Regulations, 2020.

All Tehsildars-cum-Incident Commanders along with the IICs of the respective Police Stations have been directed to restrict the movement of vehicles carrying corpse from other districts/states to Swargadwar.

Besides, the Executive Officer of Puri Municipality has also been instructed to keep a close surveillance and ensure strict implementation of the order.
