Cuttack: In a major breakthrough, the Choudwar Police busted a notorious inter-district lootera gang and arrested five among seven of them during a raid here on Friday. Two others of the gang managed to escape.

Police also seized 220 gram gold, 237 gram silver jewellery and two vehicles from their possession.

The arrested looters have been identified as Harihara Samal, his wife Mami Samal, Suryakant alias Tapu and others.

According to police sources, the main accused Harihara was allegedly selling the looted gold and silver ornaments through his wife Mami.

Pradip Pradhan of Kapileswar had lodged an FIR in the Choudwar Police station following a theft in his house. Based on the complaint, Police started an investigation and were successful in nabbing the looters after nearly 10 months.

Police is now questioning the arrested robbers and effort is on to nab the other culprits.

According to cops, all were history-sheeters with various cases of dacoity, snatching and highway robbery pending against them at different police stations across the state.

“We are able to bust a big gang with miscreants from different districts of the state. They were involved in more than 30 robberies in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal and Jagatsinghpur. It’s a breakthrough for the police. Rest of the gang members will be arrested soon,” stated Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh.
