Bhubaneswar: The Puri Sea Beach Police Station on Saturday served show cause notice to BJD’s Satyabadi MLA, Umakanta Samantaray for violating COVID19 norms by attending the funeral of MLA Pradeep Maharathy at Puri Swargadwar on Sunday despite being positive for novel coronavirus.

According to sources, the police served the notice at the legislator's official residence in Bhubaneswar.

Reacting on the development the legislator said, “He has received the notice and will take necessary steps after taking his lawyer's advice.”

Earlier in the day, the MLA has tendered an apology for his mistake.

In a video statement, Samantaray said, “Pipili MLA Pradeep Maharathy’s death came as a shock and I could not control my emotions and reached Puri Swargadwar to attend his funeral on October 4.”

On October 5, local outfit Jagannath Sena had filed an FIR against School and Mass Education minister Samir Ranjan Dash and the Satyabadi MLA at Puri Sea Beach Police Station for flouting COVID-19 norms.

Earlier today, the convenor of Jagannath Sena, Priyadarshan Patnaik had lodged a complaint against Dash and Tourism minister Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi at Kharvel Nagar Police station for attending the funeral of Maharathy at Puri Swargadwar despite being COVID19 positive.
