Paralakhemundi:  In a first such move, amid worrying rise in Covid-19 cases, the authorities of Gajapati district in Odisha on Tuesday imposed a 3-day lockdown followed by 4-day shutdown in the district. The alternate restrictions will be enforced every week until further orders.

As per a notification issued by district collector, Anupam Saha, the lockdown will remain in force from Monday to Wednesday while the shutdown will be imposed every Thursday to Sunday till further orders.

The order will be imposed in four gram panchayats—Kerandi, Katalakaitha, Ranipentha, Jhami, all block headquarters, Paralakhemundi Municipaity and the all the areas under the jurisdiction of Kashinagar NAC.

The entries and exit points of block headquarters, Paralakhemundi municipality and Kashinagar NAC have been sealed until further orders to restrict movement of people, the notification read.

However, goods carriers and medical emergency services will be allowed for inter-district and inter-state movement during the lockdown and shutdown.

While during lockdown, all shops, commercial establishments, offices will remain closed, there will be no economic activities except medicine shops, hospitals and delivery of milk during the shutdown, the notification stated.

Notably, Gajapati has so far reported 1,145 cases after 89 new positives on Tuesday. Out of the total, 466 cases are active while 670 patients have recovered from COVID-19. The virus has claimed nine lives in the district.
