MeT dept issues orange and yellow alert for several districts

The Regional Meteorological Department, Bhubaneswar, has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts in Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms with wind speeds up to 50 kmph. Residents should stay vigilant.

The Regional Meteorological Department, Bhubaneswar, has issued orange and yellow warnings for several regions in Odisha, warning people to stay alert for the next three hours.

The MeT department’s forecast (9:20 am, today) mentions moderate thunderstorms accompanied by surface wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall. 

Areas likely to be affected by this weather are Kendrapara, Bargarh, Jagatsingpur, Nuapada, Sambalpur, and Bolangir districts within the next three hours.

Under this impact, minor damage to loose or unsecured structures and banana trees is expected, along with some damage to standing crops.

Residents have been advised to stay vigilant and be prepared to take necessary action as the situation develops.

Yellow Warning for Coastal Districts

Simultaneously, a yellow warning has been issued for parts of Balasore, Bhadrak, and Puri districts. Light to moderate thunderstorms, lightning, surface wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, and light to moderate rainfall are expected within the next three hours.

People in these areas should keep a watch on weather updates and be prepared to move to safer places if conditions worsen. Precautions should be taken to protect against lightning strikes, it said.

This advisory by the MeT department aims to keep the public informed about the ongoing weather disturbances and ensure that safety measures are timely adopted.

Formation of Low-Pressure Area?

A low-pressure area is expected to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department. 

This system is likely to intensify over the next 48 hours, bringing widespread and heavy rainfall to Odisha until May 30, providing relief from the heat and hastening the arrival of the southwest monsoon.
