The monsoon 2021 will make its onset over Odisha with a bang on June 11 at midnight, when the State will be going to record a very heavy downpour in its coastal region.
For nearly 48 hours, the State is predicted to witness extremely heavy rains on the days of June 12-13, when the low-pressure system that is predicted to form over north Bay of Bengal close to Odisha coast on June 11 will cross the State coast in early morning hours of June 13.
As per the model outlook, this low-pressure system will also bring widespread rains to the districts in the interior and western Odisha during the next weekend.
An analysis of the model outlook of IMD, CGEPS(MME), US-GFS and ECMWF indicates that due to the formation of a trough over the north Bay of Bengal at the evening hours on June 10, and the same having been extended to over Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, these states will be going to record rainfall in the range of 1-2mm per hour. The rainfall is predicted to be widespread on June 10, but no forecast heavy rain, except in some places.
The Low-Pressure Impact
The model forecast is a low-pressure area in the north Bay of Bengal, close to the Odisha coasts, will come into shape in the early morning hours on Saturday (June 12). And the system is predicted to cross the Odisha coast by 11:30 hours in the morning on June 13 (Sunday).
Under its impact, the districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur are going to record heavy downpour in the range of 8-12 mm/hour during the midnight hours on June 12. The twin city of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are also going to record very heavy rainfall during the midnight hours on June 12. There is a forecast that wind speed in the early morning hours (when the system will cross the Odisha coast) on June 13 will be in the range of 37-55 kmph.

- Khurda, including Bhubaneswar.

- Dhenkanal

By the 11:30 morning hours on June 13, a heavy downpour is predicted for districts like Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh and Sundargarh. The districts of Balangir, Nuapada, Sonepur, Bargarh and Sambalpur are predicted to record very heavy rain during the noon hours on June 13. However, the coastal districts will see no rainfall from noon on June 13.
But the districts of Rayagada, Kalahandi, Phulbani and adjoining places will witness heavy to very heavy rain in the early morning hours on June 14.
Long Range Forecast
As per the extended long-range forecast, Odisha will not be recording any significant rainfall during the days of June 16-18. The days may mostly remain dry. However, the State will be hit by moderate to heavy rainfall on June 20. IMD forecast shows good rainfall in Odisha till June 24.
