Here is a flash. In the next half-an-hour, lightning flashes are predicted for the districts of Puri, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur in the next 6-hours.
As per the lightning forecast by ECMWF, by around 6:30 hours, lightning is predicted at places like Cuttack and its adjoining areas. The lightning activity is predicted to take Bhubaneswar and its adjacent places into its grip in the next 1- hour (up to 7:30 pm). Around the same hours, lightning activities are predicted at some places in the Sambalpur district.
The forecast shows lightning activities in the district of Keonjhar, Deogarh, Jharsuguda etc at around 9-9:30 hours tonight. Predictions show Puri town may witness lightning past midnight today.

When many places in Keonjhar witnessed cloud to ground lightning today for nearly around 25 minutes at around 4 pm onwards, at around 5:07 pm, a cloud to ground lightning was detected between the fire station square and very near to Kolathia square in Bhubaneswar. Data categorise it as a strong slammer type having 33kA current. But the lightning span has been for less than 5 minutes. Lightning was also witnessed at places near Berhampur, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Jajpur.
Bhubaneswar July Rain History
The IMD weather data shows Bhubaneswar had yesterday recorded its third-highest ever rainfall in July. The Capital City has recorded 78mm rainfall in just 1-1/2 hrs on July 20.
Now consider the interesting fact. It seems July 20 brings often heavy rain for the City. Because, it was also July 20, 2017, when the Capital City had recorded the highest ever July rainfall. The rainfall was measured at 105.8 mm. Again the second-highest rainfall (105.6mm) in the Capital City was recorded on July 17, 2011. Reflecting a big coincidence, it was again July 20, 2012, when the Capital City recorded 105 mm rainfall to go into the record books as the third-highest July rain in history.
