Bhubaneswar: The season’s first cyclonic storm in Bay of Bengal is just 48 hours away. Though clouds are positioning to develop into a cyclonic storm, the haze over its landfall is getting clear day by day.
Models are now showing a rare unanimity. All are now converging to a conclusion that Cyclone Yaas will be heading towards West Bengal coasts.
For Odisha, though clouds in association with the system had clouded the skies here, sunny skies will greet the State tomorrow. (See the image above)
There goes a saying morning shows the day. And going by the adage, Cyclone Yaas will only kiss the Odisha coast of Balasore and go towards Purbi Medinipur in West Bengal.
- All reputed models like INCOIS, US-GFS and ECMWF predict that landfall will take place in West Bengal (PurbiMedinipur district).

CURRENT STATUS OF LOW PRESSURE
The mean level sea pressure of the area is measured at around 1007 millibars. And the surface wind speed is estimated at around 37 kmph. Though the gusting speed is measured at around 60 kmph.
For 48 hrs from now, the system will track in the north direction, which means far away from the coastline and therefore gathers steam to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm by the evening of May 24, when the central pressure of the system will fall to around 960 mb.
In tandem, the system will acquire a gusting wind speed of 140-150kmph on May 25, when it will still be in the deep sea.
CYCLONE YAAS STRUCTURE
As per model data available, the eastern and southern part of cyclone Yaas will be packed with knocking down speed and heavy rain-bearing clouds.
Therefore, after landfall, the big punch will be delivered post the passing of the eye.
Since Odisha lies to the west side of Cyclone Yaas, it will likely to be spared from its disastrous impact.
ODISHA IMPACT
As Cyclone Yaas continue its journey towards West Bengal, still it will leave its impact on Odisha in a significant way.
- Stormy gale to sweep Odisha shores from the noon of Tuesday (May 25).
- The gusting wind speed will swarm along the coast from Gopalpur to Balasore.
The speed at various places are given below.
- Gopalpur offshore: Gusting speed at 80kmph.
- Puri To Jagatsinghpur offshore: The wind will be gusting at a high speed of 100kmph.
- Kendrapada To Balasore offshore: Wind will gust at 90kmph.
Meanwhile, the gusting speed of wind on the entire coastal stretch from Berhampur to Balasore, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, will be around 40kmph from noon hours of May 25.
MAY 25: By around 8:30 hours, the gusting wind speed in Balasore will rise to 70kmph.
- When Bhadrak will be witnessing high speed wind around the same hours, the speed of the wind will gust at 50-60kmph in Mayurbhanj and adjoining places in the adjacent districts.
MAY 25 MIDNIGHT: Gusting wind speed in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack is predicted to touch around 70kmph.
In the rest of coastal districts like Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Bhadrak, the stormy wind to gust at 90kmph.
MAY 26: Morning 5:30 hours: The gusting speed of wind in Balasore will touch 100kmph.
- At around11:30 hours on the morning of May 26, Cyclone Yaas will kiss the Odisha coast.
- The impact will then get extended upto northern districts like Mayurbhanj. The gusting wind speed will range between 70-100 kmph.
LANDFALL TIME AND PLACE
As per ECMWF, Cyclone Yaas will make landfall at Purbi Medinipur in West Bengal at around 2:30 afternoon hours on May 26.
The gusting wind speed is predicted at around 150 kmph.
