The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday informed that a low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and it will subsequently intensify into a cyclonic storm on May 24.
"The low-pressure is expected to intensify into deep depression tomorrow and into a cyclonic circulation on the morning of May 24. The cyclonic circulation will cross coasts between West Bengal, Odisha & Bangladesh as very severe cyclonic storm in the evening of May 26," said IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra while speaking to OTV.
"At that time, the wind speed might reach 120-165 kmph. After the low-pressure intensifies into deep depression, the exact place of landfall and time can be ascertained," the IMD DG added.
"The sea conditions will be rough and therefore, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. The northern coastal parts of Odisha is likely to receive heavy rainfall due to the impact of the cyclone from May 25 onwards," he said.

"No need to panic as the Centre and the State governments are taking all steps to tackle the situation," said Mohapatra.
Informing about the same, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar tweeted, "A Low-pressure area has formed over east-central BoB today morning. To intensify into a CS by 24th May. To intensify further into Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, move north-northwestwards and cross West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha & Bangladesh coasts around 26th evening."
Earlier today, Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre HR Biswas said that the cyclonic system over the southeast and adjoining Bay of Bengal may trigger a low-pressure area over east-central and north Andaman sea.

"It would move in the north-westward direction and intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24. The low-pressure area formed over the central Bay of Bengal is likely to move north-westward and would intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24. It is likely to hit the coast between Odisha and West Bengal by the morning of May 26 ,” Biswas said.
