Bhubaneswar: In the early morning hours of today, Cyclone Yaas turned into a severe cyclonic storm . The system had moved in parallel to the Puri coast during the last 12 hours. Therefore, Bhubaneswar witnessed rain since midnight.

With the central pressure of Yaas down by nearly 10 mb and wind speed climbing up by 35 kmph in the past 12 hours, Yaas is now battling with little unfavorable vertical wind shear

It will turn very severe cyclonic storm by midnight today. And in the next 12 hours, Cyclone Yaas will be getting all the parameters favourable. And it will attain its peak intensity (130kmph) just before landfall.

Landfall Place

Given that Cyclone Yaas has moved more westward, which is evident from its new location (18deg N – 88.6 deg E)

It has in the last 24 hours has moved from it earlier location of around 90 deg East longitude to around 88deg E today.

All models have a convergent view that continuing it’s ongoing movement away from the east, Cyclone Yaas will move very close to Kendrapada by midnight today.

As the latitude and longitude data, which is predicted as 20.79 degN and 87.08 deg E, the place of Landfall is predicted to be at around Bhitarkanika National Park, claims JTWC. The landfall will spread over 63km area, it added.

Post landfall, Cyclone Yaas will enter Jharkhand after the midnight hours of May 26.

Meanwhile, before reaching Jharkhand, Yaas will be pummelling down the districts of Jajpur, Bhadrak, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj throughout the day of May 26.

The US-GFS model also clearly mentions that by midnight today, Cyclone Yaas will move very close to Kendrapada and the system will cross the land of Odisha coast in the Kendrapada district.

ECMWF: The latest forecast by top agency shows that Cyclone Yaas will be crossing the land along the coast of Bhadrak district.

UK Metrology: The Prediction by this ace agency is cyclone Yaas with a central pressure of around 960mb will cross the Bhadrak coast at around afternoon hours ( 2:30pm).

AccuWeather: The forecast by AccuWeather met scientists locates the landfall place of Cyclone Yaas as between Kendrapada and Bhadrak.
