For some women, a saree is just a six-yard drape for festivals and functions while it is a daily use cloth for some. However, women today are breaking stereotypes that have been set for saree.
From participating in a Sambalpuri saree to working out, women are taking traditionally-believed functionality constraints to new levels.
A glaring example is dancer-choreographer Rukmini Vijayakumar who literally stuns the internet with her splits, backflips, and other gymnastic videos in a saree. The classical and Bharatnatyam dancer is an expert and can perform impossible stunts donning a saree.
In the video, she can be seen in a village where she performs all the stunts with much ease. She started a trend on social media by sharing her stunt videos and wrote, “The things we can do in a well-drapped saree. PS:- All the clips are ‘behind the scenes’ from the video that I directed last year for work yoga day.”
Since being shared online, her video has received 270K likes with thousands of comments praising her talent.
“Beautiful you and beautiful surrounding, where was this shot?” asked a fan.
Another user commented, “Jay mahakaal... incredible performance.”
“Ma’am, do dance on this Shiv Tandav and make a video plzz,” commented another user.
This apart, the video has been filled with comments like Wow, excellent, awesome and emojis of heart and love.
Earlier, an Odia woman Madhusmita Jena had taken social media by storm after she participated in the 2023 Manchester Marathon in a ‘khandua pata saree’. Instead of wearing a gym wear, she participated in the marathaon in a saree to showcase her culture.
